One of the more interesting designers that I have come across since working at The Garden Gates has to be Jessica Kagan Cushman. Her stuff really stuck out in the showroom, not sure if it was the sassy resin bangles or the the hilarious tote bags but her work really caught my eye. Holy cow, I just looked, she’s the daughter of Vladimir Kagan. No wonder why she has such a great eye, his work is some of my favorite of the Mid Century style. I first noticed his stuff while hanging out at Lost City Arts in Manhattan, right by all the cool statues by Harry Bertoias. My friend pointed him out to me once at a Modernism show, Mr. Kagan seemed like he was having a blast.
So wow, great design runs in her family. The Butterfly Clutch looks really cool, it has a classic butterfly style on it. Perfect for running around town taking care of business, fluttering around like the animal it reps. The leather tassle is a cool addition you don’t see everywhere. When you look at the clutch you wonder what cool mysteries the bearer has in it, from diamonds and jewels to antique manuscripts of forgotten poets of the past. Ok, maybe just a lipstick, wallet and keys, but why shutter the third eye of creativity when talking about something so fun and hip?
So you have the clutch, what next? You really really have sport one (or two, or three, or four, or five…) of her resin bangles with some really fun phrases on them. They range from the defensive (The Devil Made Me Do It) to the inspirational: Age and treachery will always triumph over youth and skill. Ha! T I think they are calling me out with the My mind not only wanders, sometimes it leaves completely, but hey, what can I say? Anyways, they look cool, they stand out, people know what’s on your mind. Probably the best part of them is they just keep looking better the more you put on. Jessica Kagan Cushman knew what she was doing when she designed these.
So any great shopper needs bags. You have the clutch to go out on the town, but when you are shopping at The Garden Gates you need something a bit bigger to put your awesome finds in. Jessica Kagan Cushman has you covered with her line of bags. I particularly like the Emotional Baggage one because it is good to keep it compartmentalized and buried under lots of boho chic items. (Good thing nobody comes to me for real advice!) The Suspicious Package bag is cool too, every girl knows a guy like that, like it or not. There is another that is called the “Don’t Touch My Junk” bag and features a drawing of a naked guy from Ancient Greece with a banner in just the right place to not offend anyone. Style with a sense of humor, that’s what the world needs more of, am I right?
Hey Lisa! It’s Claire, your favorite niece!
Cute story…
I was chillin’ at The Garden Gate taking pics of flowers & stuff , & Dad comes staggering in, lost, clutching a list in his hand.
I knew what Mom had put on that list–inside stuff. So I went to help him.
I took him room to room & he tripped out when he saw all the cool stuff we have at home that he’s been taking for granted.
So he got the list & I talked him into buying those pj’s I told you about–remember? And yeah, I’m totally snagging them after Mom wears em once.
I miss you, aunt Lisa! I love you! Come home soon! Bye.

I walk into the shop this morning and had to take this picture. This was such a great picture of great goodies for Easter. I remember when I would dream of these like this for Easter as a child and only every got drappy old baskets with the hard candy. My kids today have it made with this type of selection of the goodies.

So, as some of you may know, I like to ride my bicycle. When I use the term ride, sometime it for 5 or 6 hours and it takes me out to Slidell or over to Reserve and back. Well, today I only went out for 4 hours traveling around New Orleans on a beautiful day with the sun shinning. That was the problem, the sun took it toll on my skin. I am not sure what was worse, the sunburn or the really dry skin. So, I was at the shop and decided to use the Mint Julep hand lotion made by Savannah Bee Co. The lotions and body butters use the wonderful powers of beeswax, Royal Jelly, honey, and floral essences to soften, restore, and rejuvenate your skin. The French would use the word “la souplesse”: to describe the effects on your skin. Difficult to translate, the word encompasses flexibility, softening, and suppleness. Our lotions and butters give you all of this, and more.
