Growing a healthy landscape and beautiful containers require constant feeding, precise water and quality plant materials.  Today with technology hitting the residential landscape market, fertilizer injectors have finally made it to the home.  Fertilizer injectors have long been used in growing operations for decades as a way to control growth, color and flowering.

Over the past years, Garden Gate has been installing fertilizer injectors at most of its maintenance accounts and seen great success for these gardens.  The biggest change has been the length of time plant materials are blooming.  Other benefits have been insect and disease reduction and overall health of the landscape.

Here is the information below from the website of EZFlow. This are easy to install and just work.

EZ-FLO Main Line Systems Feed the Entire Landscape Automatically Every time You Water

EZ-FLO Main Line Systems attach directly to your in-ground sprinkler and/or drip irrigation system. Every time you use your irrigation system, EZ-FLO releases small, precision doses of water soluble or liquid non-hazardous fertilizers into the water stream on a consistent basis. One system will feed through both sprinkler and drip irrigation zones without the need to make any adjustments or nozzle changes to compensate for water flow or water pressure.

Main Line Systems have been designed to connect directly to your irrigation system after an approved backflow prevention device. They are designed to withstand constant static water pressure present in your irrigation system. These units are constructed of heavy-walled, UV-Resistant PVC and have no moving parts making them very reliable, dependable and maintenance-free.

EZ-FLO Systems are Easy to Install and Easy to Use

EZ-FLO Systems can be installed in minutes. We recommend that they be installed in an underground valve box but they can also be hidden under decorative rocks or housed in  above ground structures when necessary. The only requirement is that they be installed after an approved backflow prevention device as determined by local plumbing code. See Backflow Information for more details on what these devices do.

EZ-FLO main line systems are installed after the backflow prevention device and normally before the irrigation zone valves to allow the unit to feed all irrigation zones. A typical installation is shown here:
In this configuration, when an irrigation zone valve is turned on, the EZ-FLO fertigation unit automatically adjusts to pressure and flow and precisely meters out the appropriate fertilizer based on the water volume flowing into that zone.

EZ-FLO main line units can also be installed after the zone valve or directly in-front of a single zone valve or multiple zone valves if you want to isolate a zone(s) from the other zone(s).  An example is shown to the right and could be for a larger irrigation system that services  lots of open turf but the owner wants to focus on their flower beds or in the case of a municipal park, just the baseball field.

Hey Lisa! It’s Claire, your favorite niece!

Cute story…

I was chillin’ at The Garden Gate taking pics of flowers & stuff , & Dad comes staggering in, lost, clutching a list in his hand.

I knew what Mom had put on that list–inside stuff. So I went to help him.

I took him room to room & he tripped out when he saw all the cool stuff we have at home that he’s been taking for granted.

So he got the list & I talked him into buying those pj’s I told you about–remember? And yeah, I’m totally snagging them after Mom wears em once.

I miss you, aunt Lisa! I love you! Come home soon! Bye.

Making Essential Herb Scented Oils

Over the years I have tried all kinds of stuff.  Once, when I became mad with a vendor, I made bee bar lotion, soap and moisturizer.  That’s right, Chad Harris 6′2″ 210 lbs of manhood, made cosmetic products one New Years.  I was so determined to prove that company that any “2 Legged Monkey” could do it.,  I found great reward in filling my house full of lavender smells.  My wife on the other hand, tells the story a bit different.  I think her version is something like, ” This bozo made a bunch of crap and then ruined all my Tupperware containers with fragrances.”  I have to be very careful with any idea of greatest in the house these days, because she always reminds me of the Tupperware.

So without saying in my house, making essential oils is highly secretive and if my wife reads this, please send help.

I was at the greenhouses today looking at the 10’s of 1000’s of herbs, succulents and annuals filling the benches and I started playing with making herb infused oils.

So if you have a herb garden, get harvesting.  You need a healthy supple of fresh herbs and if you must result to buying them, consider a farmers market rather than the grocery store.

Follow the below directions:

Avocado oil( for bathtubs)

Olive Oil( for food)

Fresh fragrant herbs

Large  jar (clean and hygienic containers are preferred)

Clean working area that you can spill, clip and make a mess.

Begin be cleaning all the herbs and removing any of  the unsightly leaves or branches.  Place the herbs into your jar, pack it as full as you can then add our oil. You will need to leave your herb/oil solutions for 3 days in the 1st phase.  It is best if you keep it tightly sealed( clean mason jars work best) After 3 days, you are ready to open move to Phase 2, place cheese cloth or a really fine colander and drain off the oil into a new container.  You will need to start the process all over again.  This is a great time to add a second herb( combining herbs for multi layer fragrances ) fill a clean jar with a new herb or same herb as in phase 1, then pour your oil into the container and reseal, leave for 3 days.  At this point you will need to decided if the oil is fragrant enough, if not repeat until you reach your desired pungency.  Now pour your herb oil into a bottle of you choice and it is ready for use.

Great combination of Herbs

-Rosemary and Lemon Verbena

-Lemon Grass and Lavender

-Lemon Verbena and Mint

Enjoy

As I was walking into the store today, I notice this beautiful planter that had large leaf basil growing to near perfection.  I make a comment to Amos,” someone better use this or I’m gonna chop it right down.”  When I as at lunch today,  I remembering  having this super yummy pesto recipe that was sitting on Beth’s desk from yesteryear.

5 minute Pesto

1 head of roasted garlic

2 cups fresh large leaf basil from the garden

1/3 cup olive oil

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper( I like it with flare/you can use black pepper)

1/4 cup grated cheese( use low fat anything, your hips will thank you)

Super basic, combine all ingredients into a food processor and mix until throughly combined.  Pesto can go on just about anything.

Hot or Cold pasta

Smoother it on cooked chicken, pork or filet.

Spread it on thinly sliced french bread.  If you want to add years of guilt, add melted goat cheese and top with Pesto.

So I not a big fan of butter.  Especially because it adds to the waist line but butter with fresh herbs really make it hard to pass at the dinner table.

Here are a few that you can play with that even I can whip up relatively quickly.

Herb Butter

1/4 lb butter

2 tablespoons Thyme

3 tablespoons Marjoram

1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest

Olive Herb Butter

1/4 lbs butter

1/2 cup chopped Nicoise Butter

1 Tablespoon Rosemary

1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest

Blossom Butter

1/4 lbs butter

2 tablespoon assorted herbs ( opal basil, marjoram, chives, thyme)

3 tablespoon edible blossoms( sage, rosemary, calendula, nasturtium)

A pinch of salt & white pepper

To make the compound butters, add all the ingredients for each recipe to a food processor and mix throughly.  Remove the mixture and form into a log shape, rolling in plastic wrap.  Freeze until ready to use.  To use, cut in circular slice.  It is used to spread on bake pita chips, vegetables, fish and meats.

Basil is a great herb.  Visually attractive and a nice fragrance. Basil is used in loads of recipes, can be kept fresh in the refrigerator in a dry plastic bag for a few days, freezes well.

My favorite thing to do with Basil?  Is to drink it!  I am not a drinker at all, don’t even have an occasional cocktail, just don’t want the edge to come off..yeah I like being high strung unless I am on vacation.

Years ago we offered a cooking demonstration once a month with a local chef that taught us how to prepare a wide variety of things and always something for fun.  Once we made Fortified Basil Lemonade Cocktails.  Here is how you do it.

2/3 cup sugar

Zest and Juice Lemon

1/2 cup water

1 cup loosely packed fresh basil

1 oz Dark Rum

1/4 cup sparkling water

Start by making a syrup, combine all ingredients except the basil in a  2 1/2 qt saucepan.  Bring to a boil and continue boiling until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature.  When ready to use, combine syrup and basil in a food processor and blend for 20 seconds.  Strain through a cheese cloth.  This is now your new Basil syrup.

Here is the good part, use 1 oz Dark Rum adn 1/4 cup sparkling water into a highball glass and add the Basil syrup and garnish with a fresh cut lime.  You now have an incredibly edible…knock your lights out cocktail. Be careful, consuming these may lead to someone getting luck.
