Roasting Hot?
Are you roasting hot this summer? I can promise you that your plants are boiling.
Here are some tips on things that you can do to minimize your gardens deterioration.
1. Consider pulling your spring plants and replanting with super summer hardy plants
a. Nirvana Vinca
b. Summer Coleus
c. Caladiums
d. Penta Butterfly Series
2. Make sure that your beds are mulched with at least 3″ of an organic mulch. I like cut, clean pine straw in bags. Stay away from the Big Box mulch…it like throwing chopped up 2×4’s on you garden. Do not use cypress mulch…they are cutting down the cypress trees that protect the entire Gulf region.
3. Water…..then water some more.
- my garden at home seems to need water in the am and touch up in the afternoon. consider
a second watering in high heat when the heat index reaches great than 100. plants just cook.
4. Fertilizing during this time period becomes a necessity but if you are not watering, you will cause harm. Water based fertilizers that offer constant feeding make all the difference in the world. They provide small doses of consistent feeding or minerals so your plants can flourish during the toughest of times.
5. If you don’t have time to water, consider planting succulents. Some can survive 30 + days without water and there are tons to select.
In addition to selection of plants, makes sure to wear gloves and use tools that make it easier rather than harder in hot conditions.
