Shady Oaks Garden Club

I had the pleasure of speaking to the Shady Oaks Garden Club today.  The requested that I speak about Night Time Gardening.  I thought to myself,” Night Time Gardening, Why!”

As always I used my trusty Google search bar and started researching plant materials that are more impressive in the evenings or the fragrance of the flower is more pungent.  The more I researched, the more it became obvious that there are tons of materials that were not at the top of my list that display better in the evening rather than during the day.

Plants such as Angle Trumpet and Hollyhocks make great displays in the evening.  Sweet Olive and sweet alyssum have wonder fragrances in the evening. In addition, using low voltage landscape lighting can create the perfect environment for those night time parties or just a few moments escape from life.

So, the next time you think that Gardening is just for the day time, remember the ladies from Shady Oaks Garden Club.

Great Baskets

Planting great flowering baskets in not an art but the understanding that if you pack it full of plants, it will look fabulous within minutes of finishing your planting project.  Make sure to select plants that fit your light requirements.  In addition, basket require water…have a plan for watering.

Try selecting plants that grow larger for the back and middle and plants that cascade for the front and sides.

Great combinations are Snap Dragons, Petunias, Lobelia and Pansies.

Great Gardening Weather

So, it finally happened, a cool front that looks like it may stay for awhile. I can tell you it is time to plant the pansies.  I am a firm believer that you plant pansies in the New Orleans area when it cold enough to turn on the heat in your home.

What pansies should I buy and is there anything special I should do?

I am a big fan of the Majestic Giant series which are large flower plants with bright colors with a blotch of color in the center.  These plants do very well and for great results, you should remove the old  flowers every week for the best flowering results.  Also, you should plant the pansies and apply blood meal at 1 lbs. per 1000 sq. feet to make the flowers spectacular.
